Types of Health Plans to Choose From

HMO

Health Maintenance Organization

An HMO requires members to select a primary care doctor. In these plans, individuals cannot see specialists without a referral from their primary care physician. With an HMO out of pocket costs are always predictable with low annual deductibles and low copayments.

PPO

Preferred Provider Organization

A PPO offers you the freedom to receive care from any provider—in or out of network. In addition, PPO plans do not require a primary care physician (PCP) or referrals. However, there will also be higher out-of-pocket costs associated with these plans.

EPO

Exclusive Provider Organization

Exclusive Provider Organizations only provide benefits within the network. While an EPO is usually more pocket-friendly than a PPO plan, there are no benefits for out of network. Typically, EPO plans are beneficial if you have to see specialists on a regular basis.

POS

Point of Service Plan

Point of Service Plans are a combination of HMO's and PPO's in that you are required to choose an in network primary care physician, but you can still see out of network doctors for a higher cost. These types of plans are not as common as an HMO or PPO.
